When you were young, what entrepreneurial experiences were you afforded? Who, or what organization, gave you an opportunity to formulate a business plan and see it through completion? If you have not been given that kind of opportunity, listen to what our program youth think about it!
“Imagine someone gave you one thousand dollars to use in order to improve your community. Now imagine that not only had this person done this before, and each time, the communities benefited greatly. This person, organization rather, is called Youth Venture -- and they have decided to gift the ETHICS Society with one thousand dollars for us to start our own undertaking for our community. An undertaking we’ve entitled “Changing the Way We Fight: Fighting Violence Not Ourselves.”
“Changing the Way We Fight” (CWF) takes the form of bi-monthly forums with members of our community, such as policemen, local personalities, and other community leaders. These forums all lead up to an annual festival/block party that serves as an accumulation of the ideas taught throughout the year. This serves to not only bring everyone together to be one unit, but also to provide an environment well-suited to our goals.
As you can tell from the title, the main theme of our venture is violence prevention, specifically towards youth. This theme isn’t just some random topic we decided to base our ventures on, it’s something that hits home for all members of the Manual ETHICS chapter. Last summer, a classmate and close friend of many was murdered by her stepfather. We thought that this opportunity was a way for us to make peace with the passing of our friend and prevent further incidents of violence in the future. The ETHICS Society is eternally grateful for this chance to show exactly what the youth can do for their community and appreciate the faith they have placed in us.” DJ Williams, Class of 2009 duPont Manual.
